whispers in the corridors
The National Green Tribunal (NGT), mandated to ensure effective environmental adjudication, is grappling with a serious human resource and financial crunch that is hampering the execution of its existing orders. Several regional benches are functioning with limited judicial and expert members, leading to delays in hearings and enforcement. The shortage of administrative staff and technical experts has also reduced the Tribunal’s capacity to monitor compliance with its directives on pollution control, waste management, and forest protection. Financial constraints further compound the problem, restricting the NGT’s ability to conduct field inspections or hire qualified experts for complex cases. Despite its proactive judgments, the lack of institutional support has weakened follow-through on many orders, especially at the local implementation level. The situation highlights the urgent need for adequate budgetary allocation and staffing to strengthen the NGT’s role in ensuring environmental justice across India.
